The Rise of the Shield Bro

Alright, it has been a long time since I’ve done something like this, and boy am I happy that it’s about something that I love to talk about. As some of you might know, there’s a new anime that was just released at animeshow.tv (you can go see it now if you want to). For those who don’t know what I’m talking about, it’s definitely not Bang Dream Season 2 ! But, for those who knows…..it’s my boy SHIELD BRO!!!! Also known as Tate No Yuusha No Nariagari.

(Anyone interested to watch it first can do now right here!)

So, if you’ve read my bio/about me before, you might’ve seen me praising a lot about no game no life, which is like, basically this entire websites name and image. BUT, for the true hardcore fans who might know me(not many I presume because I don’t disclose much info because I seldom interact with people TWT), you would know that the first ever web novel/light novel that I completed was Shield Bro(I will refer it as shield bro from now onward). I have followed that series since the first time I stumbled upon it, and have read the god almighty Yoraikun translator which translates basically 1 chapter a day(impossible for me)! And that has inspired me to actually do what I’m doing here today, which is to also translate for everybody else!

Okay, let’s not talk about my story and just jump right into it! (inset pewdiepie meme). Right so, shield bro? How am I gonna go about this….Honestly, I don’t know, I’m so hyped for the anime and had just finished watching it, and it honestly BLEW MY FREAKING MIND! The art, the animation, the CG, the everything!! EVERYTHING IS WHAT I IMAGINED IT TO BE!!!! Sorry for the all caps, but it was really what I hoped for! As a die hard fan of yoraikun and the shieldbro that he translated, everyday was another day to live as I waited for the next chapter to appear, and read, and appear and you get it. So let’s just talk about some of the things that I like about this LN/Anime now.

(From this point onwards, it’s spoiler cities BOY)

The troupe for this is just different from your typical isekai genre. Usually when you think about isekai, you would think of the now apparent, goes to a different world, then gets something OP, and then enjoys the world with their own pace. Something like the recent Slime datta ken, and the death march are of this example.

Which, I don’t hate, don’t get me wrong, I’ve read both of the web novels and light novel of it, and it was an incredible read. But, shield bro is on another category where I like to call, edgy isekai genre. Examples that I can think of on the top of my head is Re:zero, which is dark af and boy do I love that as well.

You might see there’s a pattern to my taste XD Anyways, ripping of from the synopsis of shield bro from myanimelist, it’s about a story of 4 heroes, sword, spear, bow, and shield. They have to defend the wave. Then the king and everyone else in the kingdom thinks that shield is the most useless hero, and he was being accused of taking advantage of Malty. Okay wait let me stop you right there, they’ve already spoiled the story with the surnames of Malty(a.k.a BITCH) and Melromarc, which is the bloody King. Well whatever, I guess the ones writing the synopsis already predicted people knowing some spoilers beforehand. Back to the story…..Right from the start, I already love it, it follows the novel, and boy do I see some subtle references to the end. One HUUUUUGE reference I saw was at the start when he picked up the book about the place that he was about to be transported. When he saw the girls image(which is obviously Malty), he already called her a BITCH! Which is really really funny when I was watching it.

So right of the bat, when this came up I was like, this means business, they aren’t playing around and ruining the anime like what they did to death march. cough cough, change entire plot. Anyways, I don’t want to say too much about other anime, people are gonna come with pitch forks hunting me down if I were to do that.

Any-whoozes, let’s skip forward a little because boy do I love how they’re trying to make things even more inconspicuous with it! When they were summoned, the 4 heroes were sent to meet with the king, and oh man! The king just outright ignores shield bro even after given the opportunity to introduce themselves. Anyways, something doesn’t really smell right but they shrugged it off and were sent to their respected rooms to stay the night. THIS, THIS IS WHERE SHIT HITS THE FAN! During one of the scenes, when they were talking about where they were from, I was shocked! They actually talked about being in a parallel universe and being on different Japan! Which I was like, oh my god author you’re a genius! So, for those of you who have not read the novel, I suggest you SKIP TO THE NEXT PARAGRAPH!, and for those who have, let us continue! Alright, so when they were mentioning that the games that they played were similar to that of their world, and when the sword hero mentioned something about having a button at the right end of the “screen”, everyone somehow has it as well. Oh and also, when the messenger was telling them that they could not party, the “help” option also told them that. But that’s the smart thing, towards the kinda end-ish of the novel, do you remember that the only way to defeat the BITCH ASS MOFO, was that they have to fight together and share their information? Because that’s how they become stronger! For example, one of them mentioned that they can upgrade their weapons/shield and lo and behold all of them could do it as well. Then when the shield bro told them that they have different types of shield which they can change, everyone else could also do it! And also the part where the shield bro has to learn how to read and somehow when they went on that island where you can farm for EXP, only he could read the inscription and learn all those OP ASS BUFFS!!!!! This is the ingenious thing that I wanted to praise!

So, the next day arrived, they start sprinkling even more odd behaviours where nobody wanted to pair up with the shield bro, and blah blah he had to kinda fight on his own. And BOOM MISS MALTY CAME TO SAVE THE DAY! When she offered to be her partner, I was like, OH MAN I’m getting cold sweat! The best part was, I didn’t realize the other subtle details like when she asked how much the armor was for and how much does it resell, and why after the fight she bought such an expensive armor worth like 440 gold! Anyone who has already picked up on it knows that this BITCH ASS GIRL IS AS FAKE AS A CHINA POKEMON CARD! And they didn’t really mention this when they were out fighting dem cute balloon monster, but in the novel, shield bro also said that this bitch didn’t actually party with him so he didn’t even get any exp whatsoever. Which was why when he was abandoned by the King, he just only reached level 2. Oh and I really love this one line when Motoyasu(aka no balls yasu) said when shield bro was betrayed, the line was, “You’re not the protagonist!”, and oh man I felt so much anger just from hearing that!

Yes, this is an edgy anime which just brings hatred to a lot of viewers from the getgo, which also might turn off some viewers because of how shitty everyone treats the shield bro. BUT, that’s exactly what makes this anime so good! It’s because of how everyone treats him like trash(hint hint), that he has to live on his own, feel the pain on his own, train on his own, eats tasteless meals, and finally getting a slave. This is what I love when it comes to character building, not some bullshit ass shounen genre(sorry for those who love naruto, bleach, one piece, fairy tail) where all they do is see some flashbacks and screams about friendships and all and becoming strong. Well again, I do watch all of those shounen animes when I was young, and I loved them, but they’ve became dull over the years and it really doesn’t peaked my interest anymore. So when it was my first time picking up this series, I felt so much pain reading it, its as if I was with the protagonist, weak, betrayed, suffered, anger, wraith(hint hintX2),.everything that shield bro felt, I can feel it too. It’s what makes me go to anime, it’s the reason why I always come back for anime, it’s because of these things that really hits me right in the kokoro(cringe fest please kill yourself weeb). Alright, before I wrap this all off, there’s one more scene which I also love, it’s what we call foreshadowing(oh shit that’s the word I was looking for), where there’s this person hiding behind the pillars when shield bro was walking away from the palace. Place your bets on who might that be!!! Just to give another hint for those who have not read the manga/novel, see the throne, see the seats.

Okay, I might’ve talked for too much, but that’s the thing, this is how much I loved this anime/novel that I wanted to share my thoughts on it. If I had a good microphone and some video editing skills, I would’ve already created a video just like Gigguk~ But sadly, I do not have any of those, including a charisma. Alright, let me just talk about the last scene, where the armor shop dude wanted to whack him, but saw shield bro’s dead ass eyes and he was like, Fuck, this guy’s been tricked. And even gave him some clothes to wear. UGH, I”ll TURN GAY FOR YOU!!!! Also, towards the end, when shield bro saw Raphtalia, UGHHH That same deadpan eyes!!! The connection with the two of them. And it ends… SO GOOD!!!! GIVE ME THAT COLD LOOK RAPHTALIA, I”LL TAKE IT ALL!!!!!! (Eww…stop it)

Honestly, I didn’t want to make this post at all, because I kinda like expected shield bro to come out as an anime and I have already anticipated my hype. But these past few days were really a mess for me….My life to be precised…So to let off some steam, I wanted to talk about a novel that was adapted to an anime which I adore and love so much which also inspired me to become a translator. So yeah, I hope that y’all would enjoy this just as much as I would, and hopefully you would share this to others. Welp, that’s it for me, anything you would like to discuss you can just comment down below, you know for sure I won’t respond at discord XD

TL;DR: Translator-san was so hyped about an anime that he has to talk about it.

Thank you so much to all my patron supporters who have been helping me since the beginning, and to those who are helping me right now as well.

I am beyond happy that you took this time to write so much about this amazingly well-crafted isekai. I LOVE the novel as well! I haven’t seen the episode yet, but I plan to as soon as I can. This wasn’t my first novel I found, but the second i finished. Still by far my top 3 favorites that are completely finished.

Thank you for all the work you do, I look forward to seeing this site every day (though I know it’s not updated daily, but still something nice to see). Keep up the good work, and if you have time can you write more about other novels you like?
Have a good day’

No problem. I was really excited when I was reviewing shield bro, and yeah I wish I would have more time to translate but sadly this is already my max that I can fit in to translate as I have intern to worry about right now. And as for other novels that I like, yeah I might actually write some more but for the time being I can’t think of one, maybe death march??? XD Either way thank you for the sweet comment ><

      No problem!
Hmm. I assume you are a huge fan of isekai, but do you stick with just Japanese or look for Korean/Chinese? I found some interesting Korean isekai-ish novels.

Thank you for all of your hard work! Hope your New Years was safe and enjoyable

I do branch out towards the korean and china novels, though not so much on the korean side, but I do love them as well. The only downside I had for china novels is the fact that A) The translation is an abomination in itself (from what I remembered reading them a few years ago), and B) It’s nowhere near as fast as the china release (again, from what I’ve remembered). So, me being chinese and knowing how to read, I still can’t really read the original version that well and thus didn’t bother to pick up anymore. And the only reason why I would know some of the china novels is due to my friend, who is also once a translator here (KKinji), where he shared some of his stories about the abundant of china novels he’d read. (when I said abundant, its similar to me watching youtube at a daily basis sort of a lot)

Whereas for korea novels, to be perfectly honest, I lay towards reading the mangas, and never really dwell into the novels. I find that after translating for a year now(!), I can’t immerse myself like before when reading any novel. Which might be due to the fact that I put “reading novel” as a job instead of a hobby, so I guess that’s one of the reasons why I can’t read another novel anymore XD But ONE DAY! I shall read back mushoku tensei AGAIN AND THIS TIME FINISHING IT!

Anyways, thank you again for the reply and may you have a wonderful new year as well :3

Shield Hero wasn’t the first novel I read, that was Long Live Summons I think, but Shield Hero was the first novel I completely finished reading and I agree completely Shield Hero was and still is one of my favourite novels (Lol still not finished LLS, translator disappeared)

    Shiro · 5th January 2019 at 10:16 AM

Oh, I haven’t heard of this novel called long live summons, but since you’ve said that the translator has discontinued the series, I might not read it, given that A) I already don’t have the time to read other novels, and B) I have like a ton more novels stored in my archives waiting to be touched one day.

But yeah, seriously though, I know that shield bro was one of those novels where the more you read, the more you get hooked into. But what I find that makes me want to continue reading besides the other novels out there, was the fact that yoraikun was the one translating it. Super duper fast speed at translating and let me tell you, if I can even have half his ability, I will definitely do well in translating once a day as well XD

Have you read Arifureta Shokugyo de Sekai Saikyou? it shares some of the themes of shield bro, I really liked it and it’s still got after stories being translated or writen not positive

    Shiro · 6th January 2019 at 12:18 AM

Yaaas, I’ve also read that before and loved it! And to be honest I’ve actually read quite far into the novel, but the issue that I had that made me stopped reading Arifureta was after Hajime went to the water tribe??? Darn it’s seriously been too long since I read this so my memory about it is really hazy now, but it kinda strayed from the plot itself. Cause the entire reason why I loved arifureta was the fact that (mini spoilers?) Hajime was abandoned(?) by his classmates as being the weakest besides the girl, and he became strong by his own, AND YUIIIIIII!!!!, Then he climbed out of the dungeon and became strong, wanting to only go back to his own world by killing anything on his path. See, here’s the issue, when he finally met with his classmates, especially that girl and the sensei, in helping defending the town against the monster horde, I was kinda like…Dude just ignore them or kill them, or even then after helping them, do something about those assholes that wanted to kill you previously instead of not pursuing them(which I know it’s cool and all that he ignored them because they’re “not worth” his time) and move on with conquering the dungeons. But he kinda became softhearted which loses its charm, at least for me.

Shield bro kinda had that similar route towards the end when the 4 heroes had to unite to defeat bitch, but that’s the thing, he still doesn’t care about the heroes, instead he cares more for his teammates and his village because they are valued the highest. He reluctantly helped them is because he had no choice if he had to defeat the bitch. Or so I remembered, I might’ve altered my memory from there but at the end, even though he kinda forgave the 3 heroes, he hated all of them until the very end.

Welp, that’s just my opinion XD

Thanks for the suggestion on arifureta though, took me to a trip back to memory lane

pokeperson1000 · 7th January 2019 at 10:52 PM

I’m excited for the TnY anime too. Though the bitch is annoying to deal with as always.

Also, just a heads up, the Death March anime didn’t change the plot, it just followed the plot of the light novel instead of the web novel. Thought you might like to know. Blame the people who adapted the web novel to the light novel, not the people who made the anime. XD

    Shiro · 7th January 2019 at 11:12 PM

Ah yes, I knew about the changes for the LN and the WN. And I even read about the reason why. So what happened was the Author himself wanted to change the plot when he was publishing the LN to give the readers a “new feeling” when reading the light novel. Which I feel that’s a bad move on his part, because the whole reason why I even liked death march is due to the fact that his entire motive is just to either find tomatoes, or rice, or whatever he wanted. And he just…does it…

Either way, it’s not to say I hated the anime/novel, I only lost interest on it as it didn’t follow with what the web novel intended to bring. Then again, lots of people kinda liked the light novel adaptation, which was surprising!

Anyways thanks for the comment :3
